A

Australian Qualifications Framework

AQF

The national policy for regulated qualifications in Australian education and training. It incorporates the qualifications from each education and training sector into a single comprehensive national qualifications framework.

Australian Skills Quality Authority

ASQA

The national regulator for Australia's vocational education and training (VET) sector. ASQA regulates courses and training providers to ensure nationally approved quality standards are met.

Builder's Licence

A state or territory-issued licence required to carry out building work in Australia. Requirements vary by state but generally include a trade qualification and demonstrated experience.

C

Competency

The ability to apply knowledge and skills to achieve expected results. In VET, competency means having the skills, knowledge, and attitude to perform a task to the required standard.

Certificate III

A qualification level in the AQF that represents skilled work involving a broad range of activities, most of which are complex and non-routine. Certificate III is the standard trade qualification level.

E

Evidence Portfolio

A collection of documents, photos, videos, references, and other materials that demonstrate a candidate's skills and experience for RPL assessment. The portfolio is reviewed by an assessor to determine competency.

Gap Training

Additional training required when an RPL candidate cannot demonstrate competency in specific units through their existing experience. Gap training targets only the missing skills rather than complete retraining.

N

Nationally Recognised Training

NRT

Training that meets the standards of the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and is recognised across all Australian states and territories. Only RTOs can deliver NRT.

National Register

R

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL

A formal assessment process that evaluates a person's existing skills, knowledge, and experience against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. RPL acknowledges learning gained through work experience, informal training, and life experience.

Registered Training Organisation

RTO

A training provider registered by ASQA (or a state regulator) to deliver nationally recognised VET qualifications and units of competency. Only RTOs can issue Australian qualifications.

Skills Assessment

The process of evaluating a person's skills against industry standards. For migration purposes, skills assessments are conducted by designated assessing authorities to verify qualifications and experience.

Third Party Report

A reference or verification from an employer, supervisor, or qualified tradesperson who can attest to the candidate's skills and work experience. Often required as part of RPL evidence.

Trade Qualification

A formal qualification in a skilled trade (e.g., carpentry, plumbing, electrical) typically at Certificate III level. Trade qualifications are required for licensing in most Australian states.

Trade Recognition Australia

TRA

A skills assessment service for people with trade skills gained overseas or in Australia who need a skills assessment for migration or employment purposes.

Training Package

An integrated set of nationally endorsed competency standards, assessment guidelines, and qualifications for a specific industry, sector, or enterprise.

U

Unit of Competency

UoC

A single component of a qualification that defines a specific workplace requirement. Each unit includes knowledge and performance criteria that must be demonstrated for successful completion.

Unique Student Identifier

USI

A reference number made up of numbers and letters that gives students access to their online USI account. All students undertaking VET need a USI to receive their qualification.

Vocational Education and Training

VET

Education and training that provides skills for work. VET includes certificates, diplomas, and advanced diplomas in various industries and trades. It focuses on practical, job-ready skills.

VSL

An Australian Government loan program that helps eligible students pay tuition fees for approved VET qualifications at diploma level and above.
