About this qualification
Live from training.gov.auQualification description
This qualification reflects the trade qualified role of a bricklayer, blocklayer or paver who may have responsibility for undertaking heritage bricklaying, refractory bricklaying, bricklaying, blocklaying and paving work in residential, industrial and commercial contexts, in both existing and new constructions. Occupational titles could include: • Bricklayer • Blocklayer • Paver. The bricklaying, blocklaying and paving industry strongly affirms that training and assessment leading to recognition of skills must be undertaken in a real or closely simulated workplace environment and this qualification requires all units of competency to be delivered and assessed in this context. Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements vary between states. Relevant state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm those requirements. Completion of the general construction induction training program, specified in the Safe Work Australia model Code of Practice: Construction Work , is required by anyone carrying out construction work. Achievement of CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement.

What evidence do RTOs usually accept?
Genuine RPL is assessed on real evidence. Every RTO sets its own requirements, but these are the kinds of things assessors commonly look for. You don’t need all of it to start — we’ll help you work out what you have.
- Proof of work historyPayslips, employment contracts, letters from employers, an ABN and invoices if you’ve worked for yourself, or a detailed resume.
- References and verificationStatements or referee reports from employers, supervisors or clients who can confirm the work you’ve done.
- Samples of your workPhotos or videos of completed jobs, project lists, plans you’ve worked from, or examples of what you’ve produced.
- Tickets, licences and short coursesAny cards, tickets, white cards, licences or short-course certificates you already hold.
- A practical demonstrationMost RPL also involves showing your skills directly — a practical task or a competency conversation with a qualified assessor.
Licensing and registration
In many trades, a qualification is only one part of being allowed to do the work. Licensing is set by each state and territory — here’s where to check. Links go to the relevant regulator.
Builder and trade contractor licensing
Building work — and in some states individual trades — is licensed or registered. Thresholds, licence classes and experience requirements differ a lot between states, so check your regulator before quoting or contracting for work.
RPL enquiry
Could RPL work for your bricklaying and blocklaying experience?
Tell us about your work. We’ll explain what a registered RTO is likely to need and whether RPL is the right path — or a better one. No cost, no obligation.
