Step by step guide to the RPL process for Australian trades
The Process

How RPL Works

From initial enquiry to receiving your nationally recognised qualification — here is exactly what to expect at each stage of the RPL process.

01

Initial Consultation

Contact RS Education for a free, no-obligation discussion about your experience. We will review your work history, discuss your goals, and help identify which trade qualification best matches your skills.

  • 15-20 minute phone call or online meeting
  • Discuss your work history and experience
  • Identify the right qualification for your skills
  • No commitment required
  • We explain the RPL process and what to expect
02

Evidence Collection

Gather documentation that proves your trade skills. We guide you through exactly what evidence is needed for your specific qualification and help you organise it into a professional portfolio.

  • Photos and videos of your work
  • Employment references from supervisors
  • Payslips and employment contracts
  • Any existing tickets or certifications
  • Statutory declarations (if needed)
03

Portfolio Pre-Screening

Before formal submission, we review your portfolio to ensure it meets the assessment standards. This step increases your chances of a smooth assessment process and identifies any gaps early.

  • We check your evidence against unit requirements
  • Identify areas needing additional evidence
  • Ensure documentation is complete and organised
  • Advise on any gaps that may need addressing
  • Prepare you for the competency conversation
04

RTO Submission & Assessment

Your completed portfolio is submitted to one of our partner Registered Training Organisations. A qualified trade assessor reviews your evidence against national competency standards.

  • Portfolio submitted to partner RTO
  • Qualified trade assessor assigned to your case
  • Systematic review against each unit of competency
  • Assessor may request additional clarification
  • Full compliance with ASQA assessment standards
05

Competency Conversation

The assessor may conduct a structured technical interview to verify your depth of knowledge. This is a conversation about your trade — not a test. It confirms the competence demonstrated in your evidence.

  • Typically 30-60 minutes
  • Conducted by phone or video call
  • Technical questions about your trade
  • Discussion of specific projects and methods
  • Opportunity to demonstrate your expertise
06

Qualification Issued

Upon successful assessment, the RTO issues your nationally recognised qualification under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). You receive the same certificate as any graduate.

  • Nationally recognised AQF qualification
  • Identical to apprenticeship or TAFE certificate
  • No notation that it was achieved via RPL
  • Accepted by all state licensing authorities
  • Qualification is yours for life
